Supermarket Direct Mail Monster Ad - Halloween

Yesterday in my mailbox there were the usual sale flyers from the three local supermarket chains. They were preinted on regular newspaper. However, in the Vons ad, there was this insert for the Monster on thicker glossy paper. Vons is the dominant chain in the San Diego area as far as I can tell. On the back side of the ad there was a graphic of the different types of alcohol they have on sale this week. In the bottom corner, was Monster 4 packs listed at 5.99 for this week.

Pics taken with my Sprint phone.

Oct 09, 2005 (The Press-Enterprise - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Beverage-maker Hansen Natural Corp.'s stock more than doubled during the first nine months of the year, easily outpacing other Inland Southern California companies.

Hansen Natural was the best-performing publicly traded company with headquarters in the Inland Empire, gaining attention from Main Street to Wall Street.

And the company -- known for its fast-selling Monster Energy Drinks -- is attracting interest from investors and joined the S&P small-cap 600 index this year.

The Corona-based company's shares (HANS) soared from $37.39 at the start of the year to almost $110 in late July, before a 2-for-1 stock split repriced the shares at $47.08.

The company's sales for the first half almost doubled to $145.5 million, from $77.4 million for the same six-month period last year. Hansen Natural's income more than tripled to $15.2 million for the first six months from last year.

"Going forward, we see the category continuing to broaden," Hansen Natural chairman and CEO Rodney C. Sacks said in a phone interview. "We're not seeing any real change in expectations for our products."

___JUNE 2005 MARKET SHARE DATA___

____June 2005 Market share %'s____

- from BLOG site data...
http://hansensmonster.blogspot.com/2005/08/intro.html
- gotten from:
http://www.bevindustry.com/content.php?s=BI/2005/07&p=9

Red Bull = 57.7%
(HANS)***= 09.2%
Rockstar = 09.1%

*** = add "Monster" + "EnergyPro" + "LOST"
- Last year (HANS) was significantly behind Rockstar ... (HANS) had just caught up in June 2005 ...
- Rockstar's biggest advantage in 2005-6 will be the extra mktg muscle that Coca Cola provides .. So we will see who wins the battle for the slots .... I do not know who pays the slotting fees for Rockstar but if it is Coca Cola then that will cut into Rockstar's profits ..
- Coca Cola has a conflict of interest via Full Throttle ..
- Fact is, the only thing close to a pure play in Energy Drinks that makes sense is (HANS) ... Red Bull is private, & Rockstar may become a vassal of Coca Cola ....

Scope,

I have a suggestion regarding the case/volume updates that you post on the blog.

it would be great if the contributors could report not only on the can/case volume but also on the retail price at which the cans sell (per distribution channel).

Hans juicy margins depend on keeping the prices close to $2/can at convenience stores, etc. It would be interesting to have a proxy on how prices are evolving at retail level.

Unfortunately, I cannot contribute because I do not live in the US. Will be happy to begin contributing when HANS begins distribution in Europe.

I would be extremely thankful if the board members could also report on the retail price in the future.
thanks.

- I don't feel compelled to track that at this moment ... My impressions on prices are good ...
- As long as the Energy Drink sector continues to grow like it is I do not expect price reductions to be a strategy of anyone in the lead ... textbook Pricing policy suggests that to be foolish during the early high demand stages of a new product .. Demand is higher than you can fulfill so you want to price your product high ... Premium products can even decline in sales if you lower the price ... It is part of the whole image thing ... Cracking the Code ... The Persauders ...
- Energy Drinks in Europe were growing at 75% a decade after intro .. I expect the 16oz category to do much the same here .. (HANS) gained mkt share this year to become #2 in all Energy Drinks & #1 in the 16oz category ...
- You live overseas, I would encourage you to web order some cases of the various product, chill, & serve ... I think that if you've not tasted "Monster" that you'll see why we are gaining on Red Bull in an already 60% Energy Drink growth wave ..
- "Monster" almost always sells for $2 plus in convenience stores ... a little less when buying on line ... a lot less at a wholesaler like SAM's because those are meant to be wholesalers to the Mom & Pop c-store types anyway ...
- The 2 for $3 is a pre-planned promotion that is sponsored by MonsterEnergy(TM) w/pre-printed stickers, etc .. It will often run near colleges during "back to school", in new areas, in new stores, etc ...
- (HANS) carries the expense on the financials as a deduction from gross sales as a part of cost of marketing, premiums, etc .. To arrive at net sales/revenues ... before you start to address the normal expenses ..
- Promotional expenses in Q4 & Q1 were very low & that is why I was able to nearly peg the EPS ... I was counting on no change in promotions during Q1 over Q4 ...
- I'd expect to see more of that during "back to school" or when new regions are being entered ... or new store chains are added ...
- It works ... Sales take off as folks give it a try ... Then when they return to the normal price the new customers keep buying & eventually sales are even greater than during the promotion ...

Forbes Top Small Co

Corona firm tops Forbes list
3:24 p.m. 10/18/2005 Provided By Knight-Ridder Open
Oct 15, 2005 (The Press-Enterprise - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- Beverage-maker Hansen Natural Corp. topped Forbes' list of the 200 Best Small Companies in the U.S. in 2005.
The Corona-based company -- maker of the fast-selling Monster Energy Drinks and a line of natural fruit juices -- was the Inland Empire's sole representative on the national list released Friday, and one of 35 from California.
Hansen Natural debuted on the high-profile list at No. 56 in 2004.
Forbes ranks the top-performing publicly-traded companies with less than $750 million in revenue, a minimum 5 percent net-profit margin and at least a $5 share price.
Companies are ranked based on a series of financial performance criteria, said Mark Rentschler of Forbes.
The criteria measure growth over the past five years as well as recent sales, net income, stock price, price-to-earnings ratio and market value.
Hansen Natural (HANS) and its investors are enjoying a tremendous surge this year.
The company's sales doubled to $145.5 million for the first half of the year, compared with $77.4 million for the same six-month period last year. Its net income tripled to $15.2 million for the same comparable period.
And Hansen Natural's stock has soared from $37.39 on Jan. 1 to a high of almost $110 during July.
A 2-for-1 split in the last quarter repriced the stock to the mid-$40 range, and it closed at $44.00 Friday, gaining $1.54.
In an interview last week, chairman and chief executive officer Rodney C. Sacks said the company expects continued growth in the product categories in which Hansen Natural competes.
Sacks was not available to comment late Friday.
The company is expected to announce its third-quarter financial results in the second week of November. Hansen Natural has about 150 workers.

The Gaslamp association is throwing a huge Halloween party this saturday. It's sponsored by Southern Comfort and Monster Energy. Word is that SoCo & Monster Kaos go together very well. Down town will fence off a few city blocks for this event,it's big, but nothing about it on Monster websight.http://www.gaslampquarter.org/events/monsterbash2005.htm

Tried to order a case of lo-carb from Business-supply.com today, great deal with free shipping. They called and told my wife they're all out. I hope this is due to overwhelming demand and not supply problems. I continue to see Monster selling out / out of stock in the places I buy it in CT, while other brands are on the shelf. Khaos penetrating CT, but still no Rumba.

- I'd be willing to bet that it is a combination of that, people ordering other supplies & adding "Monster" to it,
- As well as them having difficulty getting their own supply due to Halloween related demand all over the USA ! ...
- There are a lot more "Monster" sponsored halloween parties this year .. As well as individuals/groups buying it for their own parties .. ! ..

Smart Stock Screen/Spotlight on Efficiency

Stock dividends today are far smaller than they were a generation or two ago. That would be alright if companies had something better to do with their profits than return them to shareholders. Alas, not all of them do.

One way to tell which companies are worthy stewards of retained profits is to look at an efficiency measure called return on equity. ROE is calculated by dividing a year's worth of the companies earnings by its net worth, or its total assets minus total liabilities. Companies with high ROEs show that they're squeezing considerable profits out of the plants, equipment and other things they already own. That suggests they'll make good use of new assets paid for with reinvested earnings.

Managers looking to boost their ROEs can do so in one of three ways. They can increase profit margins by either cutting costs or raising prices. They can improve asset turns, or sales relative to the value of the company’s assets. Or they can simply borrow. Taking on more debt shrinks a company's net worth, giving the ROE ratio a smaller denominator and larger overall value. As useful as ROE is, that's its flaw. So when you use the measure make sure you look at debt too.

Our efficiency screen looks for ROEs of at least 20% and makes sure operating margins and debt capital ratios have improved versus their five year averages. It also looks for returns on invested capital, or ROI, of at least 15%. ROIC is similar to ROE, except that it adds debt onto the denominator instead of subtracting it, thereby outing overborrowers.

Other criteria: Sales and earnings each must have grown by 10% a year over the past five years, trailing 12 month sales must top $200 million, and average daily trading volume must total 100,000 share or more.

These companies boast solid returns on equity and strong earnings growth:

Hansen Natural (HANS)
Current Price 47.70
ROE 44%
5 Year Sales Growth 21% Forward PE (Current Year) 23

hooty800: so far the company has not put out any press release on when the next earnings release will be made. Pretty sure the release will on 11/10, day before the annual stockholders meeting on 11/11. Could even be done on the morning of 11/11, day of meeting, but most likely on the 10th.

- will be Halloween week according to First Call ... IBD was saying Halloween day ... Could be though:
http://money.cnn.com/data/earnings/profiles/HANS.html
- I feel pretty sure that we'll beat analyst(one) estimates ... It is lower than actual for Q2'05 & from what I'm seeing we did not go backwards this Summer ..

- ClearStation(owned by E*Trade now) has 11/10/2005 which is the day before the Annual Shareholders Meeting ...
- mr.peluso__said that he called Rodney's secretary & that she said it was 11/19/2005 ...
- Shark thinks it will be what ClearStation also says ..
- EVERYBODY COULD BE PARTIALLY CORRECT:__It is entirely possible that (HANS) could release Revenue #'s on Halloween or the week of Halloween ... EPS#'s on the Wednesday before the meeting ... A split announcement on the day before the meeting ... Full financials on the day of the meeting or the night before ... You just never know & (HANS) hasn't put out a bulletin yet ..
- Of course, (HANS) could always put put a press release on Halloween as to the day of EPS Announcements .. & they could always couple that w/Revenue #'s ...
- These are all reasons why it is dangerous to be short right now ...
- As far as IBD-100 saying that there will be slower growth .. I went into why that was not IBD but maybe the one overly conservative analyst ... who said that ... via his low EPS estimate ...
- I think it highly unlikely that Q3 will be slower growth than Q2 .... Absolute sales will likely be higher, so will EPS ... & triple digit growth will likely be the same or higher ... I'll find & re-post those thoughts .. They may be on the BLOG ..

Per IBD:

"Energy drink maker to report on Halloween; triple-digit growth expected to slow"

I guess that last sentence explains why we are trading at 13% off the highs.

The question is who expects it to slow? Management? or the Street? IBD?

I guess if we get a confirmation of some type at earnings date of continuing triple-digit growth, then we should rocket upwards?

Msg: 40385 of 41079

- IMHO .. What they put in their own caption is misleading .. Not enough words to explain themselves .. They should have instead pointed out the 99 RS=Relative Strength ...
- IMHO ... IBD is saying that they estimate Q3'05 EPS growth over Q3'04 to be 144% versus the prior actual of Q2'05 versus Q2'04 of 186% ... A lot of folks would love to have that & it is actually still accelerating EPS growth .... .. Those are the #'s in their own IBD 100 SmartLink Table ..
- As far as I'm concerned I hope that everyone on the Street/etc. continues to underestimate (HANS) growth .. Right now I think that folks are afraid to stick their necks out .. What's already happened is still unbelievable to them .. GOOD .. Let's rely on our own consistently more accurate EPSguesstimates .. We've done far better ...
- Again .. IMHO .. What they put in their own caption is misleading ..
- We've never been given the premium that we deserve though, & may never .. We deserve a multiple that puts us at a PEG of 1 but since we have real earnings & not hyped up fantasy earnings like so many tech co's do as a result of their captive analysts who pump for the underwriters then we will probably never get those sorts of results .. I am OK w/that though because it means a decade of smooth growth ahead ... This based upon the fact that Europe was growing its energy drink market at 75% at decade after the intro of Red Bull .. & we are now crossing all genders & demographics in the USA ..
- As far as a mere 144% profit growth ... I don't see that happening since Q2 & Q3 were pretty close together & almost always are ... Usually Q3 is a little more penny wise than Q2 ... I'd expect the same or a little better again ... So I'd expect the comparisons to be pretty similar as well ... I'd expect 186% or better growth .. btw: __ anything higher than last year's is still accelerating EPS growth ... So even something like what IBD has projected is still accelerating EPS growth over last year's Q3 ...
- If the over all mkt expects slower growth comparisons then I think they'll be surprised ...
- We have to consider that IBD never used to even publish a guesstimate though & never expected triple digit growth in the 1st place so I would be suspect of the source ... I don't know if that is IBD's best suite anyway .. I don't know who they get the guesstimates from or if they have staff doing them .. BUT ... it does show a lack of understanding of the (HANS) seasonal sales cycles ..
- Q3 sales$ should be the same or a little more than Q3 sales$ ....
- Also, since Q4 used to be so small for (HANS) then w/"Monster" expansion then Q4 could be a blow out as well but we won't get those numbers until say April'06 ? ... With Q1'06 coming in May'06 ? most likely ...
- As time goes by & "Monster" increases as a % of total (HANS)sales then we will probably also have higher margins simply by virute of the dominance of the high margin product in the mix .. That gives out profit growth a little additional boost along w/the Energy Niche growth & our gaining mkt share .. All of which seem strong in the store cks ..
- At worst, at some point we might slow to 60% profit growth but that could be a decade from now ..
- IMHO - not only will we not see triple digit growth go away this time, we will not see a decrease in that triple digit profit growth, but an increase in profit growth ,.... & over Q3'04 it will be an acceleration in profit growth .. BUT ... it will be similar to Q2 since we are talking about a time of year when folks are so busy meeting drink demand that there is little time to seed new accounts ..

Long-Term Sentiment: Strong Buy 10/29/05 04:34 pm
Msg: 41082 of 41082

MY GENERAL POINT IS THIS:

- As long as the Energy Drink niche is growing 60%+ per annum ... aka: a bigger market pie ...

- As long as (HANS) is gaining market share ... aka: taking a bigger part of that growing market pie ... & thus growing 80%+ which represents the market pie growth plus the increasing slice of that pie ...

- Remembering that::::___
(in sales y'all, not profits, profits are higher due to margin & leverage from sales ..& economies of scale)

- As long as (HANS) profit margins are growing by simple virtue of the fact that high margin energy drinks are becoming a bigger part of the product mix ..

- Then ... EPS will grow far more since when you do the formula w/profit margins (growing) ... against the sales growth & energy drink market growth ... You will get triple digits .. ! ......

- High double digit sales growth will continue to give us triple digit EPS growth for quite a while !

- We have never had (HANS) products in the Gulf South 'til recently ... I never saw them growing up ..
- So I have to say that I am hooked & sold on the Smoothie product referenced above ...
- I had 2 this evening w/an excellent hot Italian Bistro Sandwich ... Awesome combo ..
- I will probably be mixing this Smoothie w/Blue Lo Carb "Monster"s in the future to see how that tastes ...
- Here is the key for me on the "Whipped Orange Smoothie" .. It is not "acidic" to the point that it upsets my stomach & it is really creamy ... I was surprised at how smooth it went down even on ice .. I am very pleased w/the drink ...
- I bought a case & at this rate it may not last long but I have to say that it is well worth the trips .. if I ever have trouble getting it over the counter then I will order it over the web .. I also need to web order the other flavors ...
- I realize that some folks don't care about the non-Energy drinks from (HANS) but here is a thought for y'all ... If the roots of (HANS) are this good in the fruit juice biz then we will corner the market on Energy Juices ... I personally started experimenting w/mixing "Monster" & various juices before (HANS) came out w/"Khaos" or "Rumba" .. I suggest that y'all watch for a future "Energy Smoothie" as well as the current "Energy Juices" which (HANS) has been the pioneer of .. It will not be all that difficult for them IMHO ... After that watch for them to purchase a dairy supply line for dairy based smoothies & other drinks ... which also have the energy component ..

- I got it at a store called "Big Lots" which is sort of a 1950's version of Wal-Mart ... I'm a little surprised that these stores are still around ... I think that they buy in {big lots} of product but maybe only one brand/product ... Stores are very small ... More like an old fashioned Dollar General Store ... There was only one Smoothie product ... Luckily I need an OJ type of product ...
- It was $.49 per can which is cheaper than ordering via the Hansen's web site at a little over .$664 per can ... Business Supply does not offer the "Whipped Orange" but does have a possible favorite "Strawberry/Banana" ... At Business Supply it is $.7175 per can ... So you can see that a retailer w/the "Big Lots" prices would be awfully handy for case purchases .. Even a small Mom & Pop convenience store could buy at a "Big Lots" for $.49, mark up the cans to a dollar or a little under & make a tidy profit .. I think they'd sell nicely for $.98 per chilled can in a convenience store ...
- I get "Hansen's Diet Root Beer" at Target .. I will be watching for Smoothies et.al. next time I'm in there .. I'll also be pricing things in comparison ...
- If I were still working in an office environment I would not at all be shy to ask for these products ... Our Secy/Receptionist buys case products for our breakroom & when I went to work there they said that if I did not like coffee that I could ask for whatever else I wanted ... They stocked especially for me ... It was great .. I asked for differing items over the years ... I would not even be shy about having her to web order these products for me ... - I've been back in for a while ..
- You may know the T/A better than I do ... but I am very happy fundamentally ..
- As far as I can tell TECHNICALLY FROM A FUNDAMENTALIST VIEWPOINT .. It looks like we put in a double bottom, then rallied, had a confirmation follow thru day, a 2nd confirmation follow thru day .. Now we are working on the right side of a base ..
- I'd expect to see a pivot point & possibly before earnings .. After earning we could have a dip that shakes out new hands similar to a handle pattern on a cup .. & then on to the pivot point & additional new highs from there to New Year's ...
- So far there are a lot of similarities to Summer/Fall 2004 ... The correction was not as deep & it was not preceded w/as steep a run up ...
- I'd wished to cash out & buy back in cheaper but when I spotted the top I questioned myself on the fact that we hit an intra day all time high .. Fact is .. the volume drop afterward should've trumped the high & I should've cashed in then ... It was the top for the 2004-5 run ...
- (HANS) will fool you sometimes .. I was going to cash out if we went further than we actually did .. Should've still been watching daily for the topping pattern ...
- IMHO we are at the beginning of another run thu next Summer ... We could still quadruple again this year but next year I'd expect it to be a 140% increase unless "Khaos"/"Rumba" take off & we go overseas .. Those could extend the annual quadrupling runs IMHO ..
- I we quadruple in this 2005-6 run then we will hit my pre-split target of:
EVERY 2500 SHARES = $1M W/IN 2 YEARS ..

bellwetherreport.com: Bellwether Report is following Hansen Natural Corp.
03:33 a.m. 11/03/2005 Provided by

Nov 03, 2005 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Today the Bellwether Report has identified Hansen Natural Corp. (HANS), a company that our analysts will be tracking over the ensuing weeks. They recently came out with a significant corporate development this month, causing a positive correction. For a full report on the below mentioned company, and many more, feel free to visit www.bellwetherreport.com for a free 30 day no obligation trial.

Today November 2, 2005 Hansen Natural Corp. is soaring. The company's stock has surpassed its recorded 52 week high.

Research firm Citigroup has given Hansen an upgrade from an initiated to buy. And Forbes has ranked Hansen as the No.1 of the Best Top 10 small companies doing business.

Once a staid maker of fruit juices and sodas, the company unleashed a beast in 2002 with Monster Energy, a caffeine-loaded drink aimed at teens and thirtysomething males. Over the past 12 months, sales have jumped 81% to $248 million--nearly three-quarters of that from energy drinks. Chief Executive Rodney Sacks is now after a bigger audience, with the more flavorful Monster Energy Assault, which is targeted at Little Leaguers, and Khaos, which contains 70% juice and is aimed at more laid-back working stiffs and stay-at-home moms.

Hansen Natural Shares Up 17 Percent After Citigroup Analyst Initiates Coverage With 'Buy' Rating

NEW YORK (AP) -- Hansen Natural Corp. shares soared 17 percent Wednesday after Citigroup initiated coverage on the beverage maker with a "Buy" rating.
The stock climbed $8.40 to close at $58.11 on the Nasdaq, slightly down from its intraday high of $58.19, which surpassed the previous year-high of $54, reached July 20. Shares gave back 11 cents in aftermarket activity.

Analyst Gregory Badishkanian said he sees "monster growth potential" from Hansen, which makes Monster Energy Drink and Monster Energy Khaos, as the energy drink market continues to grow. Approximately 73 percent of Hansen's second-quarter revenue derived from energy drink sales. The company also makes natural sodas and juices.

Energy drinks accounted for $1 billion in sales 2004 and Badishkanian predicted its growth over the next three years will be in the mid-teens.

He noted that the stock is still a speculative play, primarily due to its volatile operating and stock history.

Increased competition may squeeze Hansen's sales, he noted, particularly if it becomes heavily promotional. Badishkanian otherwise seemed to downplay Coca-Cola Co.'s increased product line up for 2005 as well as PepsiCo Inc.'s efforts to gain more market share.

He noted that both beverage giants have focused limited resources in this category over the past five years, thereby allowing Hansen to capture greater market share from industry leader Red Bull.

Third-quarter earnings, he predicted, would come in at 58 cents per share with sales growing 63 percent. For the fourth-quarter, Badishkanian forecast a 46-cents-per-share profit with revenue increasing 34 percent. He foresees a fiscal 2005 profit of $2.04 and a 2006 profit of $2.53.

_____SMITH BARNEY REPORT______

summary-Smith Barney/Citigroup report

Hi all,

what follows is the summary section of the Smith Barney report on HANS.

* we believe Hansens is well positioned within the rapidly growing energy drink category

* we note HANS stock is up 177% YTD, but we believe upside remains. The valuation looks attractive given the 18% L-T eps growth est and favorable financial metrics (LTM ROE and ROIC of over 58% and FCF yield of 2.2%).

* with a 34% short interest and a 20 p/e multiple (to our 2006 est), we think investors are expecting the competition to materially impact Hansen. The current stock price also discounts major category growth deceleration

* we, however, believe our our 2005 and 2006 ests of 2.04 and 2.53, which imply 136% and 24% growth, are achievable. We initiate coverage of Hansen with a BUY rating and a $72 target price.

* We believe continued strong performance over the next few quarters will drive stock upside

I understand that this is not news for most long-term longs, but thought it would be interesting to post the summary.

The report discussess a few of the points the bear arguments rely on: growing A/C, increased competition, price cutting, product returns at Costco; the analysts conclude that these points are overrated.
